How to style a family photoshoot
5 style tips for family photoshoots
#1 keep it neutral
I love colour but with experience have found the best way to style yourself and family for a photoshoot is to keep it neutral. If one person is wearing a bright colour it tends to overpower the entire shot and I want you to be able to focus on the emotion and connection shared between you.
#2 limit patterns + branding
Similar to the first style tip I would tend to stay away from intense patterns, characters or large branding. Again it draws the eye and can drag your eyes to that item every time you look at the photo, but also sticking to a simple look will keep the photos looking timeless for years to come.
#3 glasses
You might wear glasses all the time and would feel uncomfortable wearing contacts or it may even be impossible. That’s ok! In fact if you do wear glasses all the time I have found that seeing photos of yourself without them is very strange so it’s best to keep them on. I never use flash on family photoshoots and I can work around glare from lighting and sunshine. So my tips for glasses wearers would be; try not to use any blue light glasses as the blue light flare shows up in photos and can obscure your eyes, and finally make sure you’re not using transition lenses that darken in sunlight.
#4 lighter and brighter
As with patterns and neutrals dark shades can really draw your eye in a photo when we want all eyes to be on your expressions and interactions. As a general rule I’d say stay away from black and if you do prefer a darker tone then opt for a navy or burgundy instead. If jeans are your go to for comfort and style maybe lean towards a lighter blue or try out a beige chino.
#5 be comfortable
Obviously you want to feel and look your best on your photoshoot - I want that too. When you feel comfortable, you will look comfortable and that in turn creates photos that reflect your true selves, not someone that you don’t recognise smiling awkwardly. Being comfortable doesn’t have to mean joggers and a jumper. Floaty dresses, or jeans and a t shirt can look natural and beautiful. Putting your baby in a romper or dungarees are hella adorable let alone practical, in that we won’t have to be pulling down their top all the time or tucking their nappy away.
